On the way to one of the Tuscan hill towns, probably San Gimigniano, the tour paused by the side of the road to take a group photo. The nicest part about a Rick Steves' tour is that the group size is capped at 24, so you're never going to be 'in a cast of thousands'.

Tuscany is famous for wine, Chianti especially, but also for several others. Brunello di Montalcino and Montepulciano are blended from Sangiovese grapes, but in San Gimigniano they produce a white wine, Vernaccia di San Gimigniano from their local Vernaccia grapes. |

Asissi, home to St. Francis, is a pilgrimage site, and like many pilgrimage sites, has built churches and other facilities to cater to and welcome those pilgrims. The church of St. Francis of Asissi is such a one.

Within the church of St. Francis of Asissi are many modernistic sculptures honoring the saint. |

In the gardens behind the church, see the shrubs artfully carved to show the symbol of Francis, the Tau Cross, and 'Pax' representing his motto: Pax et Bonum (Peace and Good Works).
