We had given ourselves an extra day in Venice so we could wander around and familiarize ourselves with the layout. Water taxis are available to take you anywhere within the lagoon. Many of the outer islands are historically associated with this craft or that one. Murano, for instance, is famous for its artistic glass.

Just across the water from Saint Mark's is the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, usually filled with original art works. From its tower, Saint Mark's is laid out at your feet.
