Rome and The Vatican

Among the most beautiful of Rome's ancient buildings, The Pantheon seen here is the third version of this building to sit on this site, the others having been severely damaged by natural catastrophes.  The inscription on the Pantheon says "Marcus Agrippa, the son of Lucius, three times consul, built this."  Because chiseling such inscriptions was very labor-intensive, the custom was to abbreviate certain words and to leave others out entirely.

The Fountain of Trevi.  Old construction such as this needs plenty of maintenance, and much of the work has to be done in warm weather, exactly the time when tourists are flocking to see the sights.  To see the Trevi Fountain without scaffolding, come back in January.

Michaelangelo's Pieta.  The last time we were this close to the Pieta was in 1967 when it was sent to Flushing Meadow Park for the New York World's Fair — at which The Vatican had an exhibit.
