As a setting for "The Student Prince", Heidelberg is ideal. It typifies in almost every way the image Americans have of Old World Germany: twisty, narrow, cobbled streets, rugged stone edifices mounted high on steep inclines, and a brash river flowing through it all.

But the 21st century intrudes on modern Heidelberg as well.

The most obvious intrusion is the flood of tourists that occupy the city by day. Perhaps it was that that made Heidelberg less enthralling... but the ice cream was very good.
