St-Emilion

St-Emilion

St-Emilion is smack in the heart of wine country, so there are wineries (vignobles) wherever you look.  Everyone here is in the wine business in one way or another.

It is also an historic district in its own right.  Within St-Emilion is the largest monolithic (carved from a single large stone) church in Europe as well as early Christian catacombs.

St-Emilion is also a very hilly region.  We were not expecting steep slopes in a wine-producing area and, indeed, the fields are generally located where it's flat, yet the town of St-Emilion has some streets that are positively hazardous in wet weather.
