Many communities along the fjords are isolated by virtue of being on islands.  A few on the mainland are isolated because of the ruggedness of the terrain: building roads to them is a major project. 

For all of these, the primary contact with the rest of Norway are the regional ferries that come by a few times each day.  They may deliver mail and freight; they pick up and drop off passengers by prior arrangement.
