(There is a hidden spot on this picture.) St Peter's (Alter Peter) in Munich is a short walk from Marienplatz. This church is in a remarkable state of preservation for a Munich landmark. During the war, Munich was heavily bombed and many of the old buildings were destroyed. All of the statuary and decoration you see was removed at the start of the war and stored in the salt mines near Salzburg for the duration. St Peter's itself took serious damage from bombs and the city was going to have it condemned as part of the clean-up effort. The outcry from the residents was so strong that the building was left as-is. Private donations were used to restore it to its present condition. |
