The cathedral in Salzburg is surrounded by courtyards and plazas, and entertainers, artisans, and hawkers congregate there for the purposes of entertaining visitors and/or separating them from a few Euros.  These buskers are in an archway adjacent to Domplatz, a prime location because it's right next to the public restrooms which are (in typical Austrian fashion) clean, inexpensive, and ubiquitous. A few meters away, you can find locals playing chess on a 6m-by-6m playing field using pieces half as tall as the players themselves. Domplatz is the geographical center of five churches: the Collegiate Church, the Franciscan Church, the Cathedral, the Church of St Cajetan, and the Nonnberg Benedictine Convent Church (which featured prominently in "The Sound of Music").  From atop the Mönchsberg, all five can be captured in a single picture. |
