Austria has been more-or-less officially Catholic since the Middle Ages.  Consequently churches, predominantly Catholic churches, dot the landscape as thick as fleas on a dog.  To illustrate this, note that both of the churches visible in this picture are Catholic churches, and they are within 50 meters of each other.  Nowhere but Austria and Bavaria will you find this sort of density. We've heard that some scattered villages have a near-total Lutheran populace, but these are hard to find, and we didn't see any in our travels. |
