Lunch on the Grass

We're actually close enough here to notice that the leaves are nothing more than blotches of paint and the faces are described more by what's around them than by what's in them.  This is 'impressionism' at its best.  No one can accuse these artists of 'good draftsmanship' and get away with it; they seem to just slosh the paint onto the canvas and somehow deliver a recognizable image.  What's going on here?
