[a052] - Notre Dame

Facade of Notre Dame de Paris

Notre Dame de Paris.  The figures across the front are the 28 Kings of Israel.  During the revolution in 1789, the people of Paris beheaded these statues because they only knew they were kings, not which kings.

The heads fell to the parvis below and some were badly damaged.  Years later some of them were restored and others were recreated because they were too far gone.

The heads which were not salvageable were given to the Musee de Cluny du Moyen-Age in the Latin Quarter.
